Steven Soderbergh and I have very different definitions of retirement.
I’m happy for that fact, though, because it means he keeps churning out fantastic
work like The Knick and his upcoming hillbilly heist movie,
Logan Lucky. We’re still a month-plus out, but this should serve
to brighten up an otherwise sparse looking August, and there’s a new trailer to
whet your whistle.
And because this is Steven Soderbergh, Logan Lucky has an incredible cast that features Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Daniel Craig, Katherine Waterston, Katie Holmes, Riley Keough,
Sebastian Stan, Dwight Yoakam, Hillary Swank, and even Seth MacFarlane.
With a simple premise—two down-on-their-luck brothers try to
rob a NASCAR race—it looks like Soderbergh and friends put their own unique,
whip-smart spin on the material. And if the director’s track record is any
indication, Logan Lucky could be one of the best popcorn
movies of the summer. (Watching a Soderbergh movie, I always get the impression
that these people would all be hanging out anyway, even if they weren’t making
a movie. Whether or not that’s true, there’s certainly a congenial feel between
the cast, even in darker films like Side Effects and
Contagion.)
Here’s the official synopsis if you need more detail:
The Logan’s are a blue-collar family from the hills of West Virginia, and their clan has been famous for its bad luck for nearly 90 years. But the conniving Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) decides it’s time to turn the family's luck around, and with a little help from his friends, the Redneck Robbers, he plans to steal $14 million from the Charlotte Motor Speedway on the busiest race day of the year.
What can I say, the man appears to love heists of all varieties.
And this one looks like a total blast.
Logan Lucky opens everywhere August 18.
